challenging dark emotional sad

I read Junji Ito's manga version of this novel and I remember it being a graphic horror, with the gore being so detailed that my main focus was directed solely on the horror element. I failed to understand that there's so much about the story.

The novel might not be a traditional horror, but the darkness and emptiness within Yozo, his slow descent to ruin, are in and of itself a horror. I now understand that the graphic horror in the manga can be considered as the visual depiction of Yozo's inner turmoil.

This book is quite bleak. This didn't have a straightforward narrative and can be a little ambiguous in some ways. This is just a short novel but it's not exactly an easy read, both in the reading experience itself and also the topic.

In the most depressing way possible, my bro just another me (I need help)

I have to say I walked into this not knowing what to expect. This semi-autobiographical novel immerses you into the mind of a young boy and his progression into adulthood while suffering from depression. His need to wear a mask as he’s trying to find a place in a world that he feels foreign to.
It’s dizzying at times to follow the going on’s within his mind. I suppose that’s the whole definition of depression. It’s not clear cut and decisions are often clouded by this dizzying, almost manic thinking.
It’s easy to pass judgement and claim that you would never make those decisions, especially when we live in a cushy time where mental health is seen and heard more so than in the early 20th century, where it was practically ignored.
Even though at times I was confused, the ending left me feeling sad. The last thought I had was, how many lives were lost because the simple words needed were never said.

Wow, No Longer Human was certainly an interesting read. It's a really good novel and really introspective.

I can see why it’s a classic.

I’m really not sure if I’m equipped emotionally and academically to judge this book on its content and prose. Regardless, it’s surely affected me and for that I give it a 4. I’m not sure how much anyone else will appreciate a reading, but it is short so I say give it a shot and see if it affects you to the same intensity that it affected me.
