People pleasing to the point of self-destruction. From a confused child to a desperate adult, a hard read but I found it hard to generate a ton of sympathy due to the blatant sexism- “I don’t view women as people” cool cool cool imma head out, actually.

While a fast read and it could be seen as funny sometimes, I find it quite an irrelevant and directionless book of someones who hates himself (usually I love the genre). I like the epilogue but I do not think it is enough to save this book

a tragic account of the nihilist character ōba yōzō, told across a series of notebooks representing various stages of his life from childhood to adulthood. while the characters are all fictional, the protagonist is said to be a reflection of the author, who ultimately succeeded in taking his own life. not an easy read, but nonetheless fascinating
