Two men, grieving their friend, take the deceased man's son fishing on an island in Argentina. Drunk, they shoot a stingray, which appalls the locals. The story shifts between episodes, past and present, which flow into one another a bit like the eponymous river. Ultimately though, the writing was too sparse and simple for me, and I found the line breaks between dialogue and speaker jarring. I felt the book was too short to really give space to the more devastating revelations, but if it had been longer, it might have been a DNF anyway.
