A winner YA novel. Great world building and intrigue that kept me guessing. Adrienne Young is quickly becoming one of my faves.

WHAT A PLACE TO END THE BOOK! A beautiful cliffhanger, and I'm glad I don't have to wait for book two to be released to see what happens next. I cannot believe it took me this long to start reading this series. Every Adrienne Young book I've read has drawn me so far into the story I feel like I'm living it with the characters, and Fable is no different.

I have an absolute love for books involving pirates apparently, and Adrienne Young absolutely killed it with this book. I was immediately invested in the characters and the world is so well designed. I like that there's no technical magic in the world, but Young still manages to capture that feeling of whimsy and wonder that typically accompanies high fantasy books.

The first half of the book involves Fable trying to get passage to an island where her dad is located. You get a ton of character development and world building in this, but in a way that completely fits into the story and feels like you're learning naturally as the characters plot proceeds. The realization that
her father isn't going to let her remain with him but instead is just giving her a map that pairs with the one he carved in her skin was so well done. You could feel Fable's heartbreak and then her resolve. Her desire to make him regret not taking her in. I really loved that she didn't crumble to pieces or even try to beg, but instead decides to take all the things she's learned from Saint and make her own way.
We love a competent and determined FMC!

I really loved that in the second half of the book we discover a ton of secrets about the crew of the Marigold. This really brings some personality and humanity to the characters and made me want to root for them outside of just because they were helping Fable accomplish her goals.

The plot twist/cliff hanger at the end of the book is perfection!
It wasn't so unexpected to me that she would get captured before getting to set sail with the crew of the Marigold, but her pseudo parent still being alive and helping to lead the ship of her enemy?? That caught me off guard. You know what they say, nobody is dead until you see a body lol.

I really enjoyed this book, but I do think it dealt with some pacing issues. A lot of things I felt deserved more than a sentence or two were wrapped up in just that. I also felt like there relationship developed too quickly, but it was sweet enough I didn’t mind so much. I liked the characters and am interested in where the story is going. I didn’t see the ending coming at all. I’m excited for the next one.

The romance was so unnecessary and the book would have been sooo much but without it.
