Fable

Most of the first half this book was like a 2.5 for me. I was slightly more invested by the end. Enough so that I do think I will read the second. & that’s mostly due to the cliffhanger. I just wish it was more enjoyable all throughout, not just the end. Maybe YA pirate books just aren’t my jam.

I really liked the atmosphere and vibes. Very piratey with treasures and crystal blue waters. And I like the author's writing. It's not overly flowery but I like the word choices and descriptions. I can really see it playing out like a movie in my head. Nothing was really all that surprising in the plot. I could see almost everything coming. But I still enjoyed the journey getting there in general.

The only thing I really didn't like was what felt like going from 0 to 100 with the romance. Fable has so much time to slowly get to know each other. But instead they barely interact until suddenly there's love confessions. And he's been in love with her since the first moment he saw her. Which is a pet peeve of mine because that's not a thing. He didn't know her at all.

Like the found family. Like the complexity of fable's father. Love The descriptions of the water and underwater especially. Not the most amazing book, characters, plot ever but enjoyed it and the atmosphere

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I just found this book kind of boring. I wasn’t able to understand the characters motivations or what the plot was even supposed to be.

Four years ago, Fable was abandoned on the skeevy island of Jeval by her father. In order to survive she learned to keep to her self and master the skill of dredging she learned from her mother. With enough money saved up, she bargains with West, the captain of the Marigold for passage to Ceros where she hoped to earn her place on her father's ship. On her journey across the narrows Fable realises that West and his crew are keeping secrets and that the world of traders and merchants is more corrupt than she thought.

I absolutely loved this! I've not read a lot of books about pirates so that whole aspect was a lot of fun. I loved all the descriptions of life at sea - it was so atmospheric and I genuinely felt like I was there on the Marigold with them. The corruption and darkness that unfolded through the book was so interesting and I was so invested in what was happening. I really liked Fable as a character and how determined she was to survive in this world. West and the Marigold crew added a lot to the story and we're all unique and interesting characters. The romance is definitely a very small part of this book but I really liked how everything happened so gradually.

Picking up the sequel immediately because I cannot with that cliff hanger...
