A quiet book. An older, reclusive man reflects on the summer his friend was responsible for a tragic accident, and later on the narrator is responsible for a tragic accident. When the younger brother of the friend and the narrator meet several decades later, they have an unspoken understanding. The narrator also reflects on the same summer he lost his father.

Evlerin arasından esen nehir rüzgârı hala buz gibiydi, ellerimi sımsıkı yumruk yaptığım zaman avucuma batırdım tırnaklarım yüzünden elim şişmişti, acıyordu ama yine de tam o anda her şey harika geliyordu bana; takım elbisem güzeldi, bu şehrin parke taşlı kaldırımlarında yürümek güzeldi canımızın ne zaman acıyacağına gerçekten kendimiz karar veririz.

I wasn't expecting such a tight, enthralling story from this book but it ended up making one of my flights over break much better. A story recollected by a man near the end of his life, about one summer in a small village that was packed with emotional charge and unforeseen happenstances. The prose and story were both sparse but both fitting and carrying impressive weight; one of the better written stories I've read in quiet awhile and the ruminations on how we deal with changes in our life felt well-done without being over done.

So good! His writing style is incredible and so is the translation.

As much as I enjoyed the prose in this novel I grew to despise the main character. This has also in some ways confirmed every assumption i’ve had about the male thought process and I now feel deeply uncomfortable.
