A Map Into the World by Kao Kalia Yang

A Hmong child observes the world around her as the seasons change, an old neighbor dies (leaving her partner of 60 years), and she learns how to interact with her infant twin brothers. She draws a "map into the world" in chalk on the sidewalk outside her neighbor's house (with permission), just in case he needs it. Inspired by Yang's experience.

When your world turns upside down, what do you do?  This young Hmong girl collects all of the wonders of her new neighborhood in her mind.  Trees, creatures, houses--she's collected them all.  But to what purpose?  When a neighbor's wife dies, she decides to share her meaningful collection with him in hopes that it will brighten up his lonely days.

This is a beautiful book filled with lush, colorful and autumnal colors and sweet, meaningful text.  This young Hmong girl faces lots of change, from a new neighborhood to life and to death, but she's not alone facing it.  It's pleasant, agreeable, and gives readers a chance to slow down and process their own lives, too.

Overall, this is a great read for those who like slice of life books, for those who prefer the homey and cozy to action.  great for grades 2-4.

Likely one of the most beautiful picture books I have ever read. A story of death, growth, neighbors, seasons, and love.

A gentle, bittersweet book about a young girl, and how she shares her joy with her baby brothers and older neighbors across the street. A beautiful story about how we connect with each other.

It could be a good way to start a discussion about new siblings, death, and the circle of life in nature and in our own lives.

Great book, beautiful illustrations AND based on a real story! What is better!

My kids really appreciate the diversity in books and this was a great example of that.
