I did not read this book expecting a masterpiece, but it delivers on what I did expect.

Benedict can in certain bits be a bit questionable, but it is after all a historical romance and not modern.

Overall it is a good book for anyone who wants some regency era romance, especially if you like Cinderella!

"Now then, I'm going to leave. And you have only one task while I go. You will stay right here, and you will keep smiling. Because it breaks my heart to see any other expression on your face."

Sophie and Benedict are tied with Polin for my favourite Bridgerton couple — Sophie is an excellent heroine, definitely my favourite — her dedication to her values and morals gives her this refreshing loyalty to herself that I just love. Sophie's continued kindness in the face of all the horror she's seen is one of the best parts of the novel. Sophie and Benedict (when he's not asking her to be his mistress) are so perfect — the angst and longing is to die for.

This isn’t the most challenging book, but it was such a fun read. I don’t typically read romance, and after reading the first Bridgerton book, I thought I’d never come back to the series. I’m glad I did.

I couldn’t love Violet Bridgerton any more if I tried. She’s a perfect scheming angel and I refuse to accept any criticism of her. Likewise with Sophie. She carried the weight of childhood trauma on her shoulders with grace and managed to come out on top, as she deserves!

I will however accept criticism about Benedict. He saves Sophie from being raped by three men only to manipulate and blackmail her into staying by his side- either as his mistress or a servant in his mother’s household. Men suck.

Even though Cinderella retellings were already cliche when the book was written, I’ll still forgive it. It’s hard not to be a sucker for the underdog getting their magical night out and eventually getting their flowers. And I’m absolutely dying to dive into Colin’s story because I know that boy’s got some groveling to do!

Why...was this literally Cinderella for the entire first third of the book? And then a collection of an insufferable, unhealthy man trying to force a woman to be his f*ck buddy for the rest until the last like 30 pages. I did not enjoy this Bridgerton novel at all. Sophie was a really great character, Benedict was not. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about his character until the very end of the book - and for what? The conflict could have been so much more interesting and less misogynistic than him trying to convince her to be his mistress. Just utter buffoonery and sexism, even for that time.
