I loved parts of this and didn't love others. There were too many points of view and I think the story would have been stronger without the POV from Selena and Frank
Spoiler(the two of them falling in love so quickly and Frank giving up his posh job was a bit unbelievable)
. I liked the stories of Sam, Leticia, and Anita and how Allende weaves together their stories, paralleling the the lives of children from WW2 with the lives of children crossing the border into the US.

I am a big fan of Allende’s work, but this one was a miss for me. It was a beautiful story at its heart, but it felt rushed. The idea of a Holocaust survivor separated from his parents taking in an El Salvadoran child separated from her parents at the border is a beautiful one; but honestly, the book’s focus on recent events (to include to Covid pandemic) fell flat. Allende’s last work, Viola, which was about a woman born during the Spanish Influenza and who died during the onset of Covid, was a more interesting take on the subject. This book used Covid as a device without really exploring it, and it just didn’t work for me.
