Odd book - this is not the Golden Age mystery I was expecting, but it is a cozy little small town portrait of sweet and kooky people. There's no whodunnit here or clues, just revelations by pure chance and coincidence. The ending might qualify as a legal justice boner but really this is a sweet small town story about a lawyer who finally gets some excitement in his life. (And that's fine!) It's enough for me to scour the library for the rest of Josephine Tey's mysteries.

A mystery/crime novel written in the late 40s. A mother and her middle aged daughter are accused of abducting a 15yo girl and keeping her locked in an attic so she could work as their maid. This was well written and cleverly plotted. I was hoping for some sort of twist but none eventuates. I liked the image of the tabloid newspapers and how they stir up outrage. The judgements of townspeople and their easy prejudices are all on display. There’s certainly lots of class judgement going on. In the end the horrible working class girl gets her comeuppance and hopefully the lovely but not well off middle class woman won’t have to wash dishes ever again.

Once I got into this, I really enjoyed it, but it took me a little bit to get going (only about 20 pages though!). Really well worked, and really well written. I'll be looking for more from this series.
