The plot was excellent. The writing was intriguing. The reason for four stars was some of the descriptions were too explicit. There were a few gruesome scenes described that just…ugh. The false god narrative was consistent throughout, so it was clear on the theology (not trying to claim a specific religion or anything…just Norse-like mythology).

It took me 1 day to read this and the only thing I found wrong with this book was that it definitely could've been longer. There was a lot more to this world and the story. I wish it was a duology.

To the criticism: this book does have a lot of popular YA tropes, but it does them really well. (As opposed to say, a series like Matched, which is more gimmicky/fluffy.)

The premise of this book sounded amazing and I could not wait to read it. At first I was not completely drawn into the story because it began with battles and blood. However, it did not take long after the initial scene for me to be enthralled! I cared about the characters, the roles they play in their communities, their rich traditions, relationships, ways of life, the love between characters, and even their spiritual beliefs and values. This book has so many wonderful elements like action, romance, passion, loyalty, and bravery to name a few! The author created a fascinating and beautiful world that is very original. I love that it was a complete story and standalone book, but I will admit I hope to see more of of this world! I look forward to reading more by Adrienne Young.
I read somewhere this was for ages 12 and up. As a high school teacher I am not sure I quite agree with that. I believe high school age and up would be most appropriate and probably enjoy it more.

I feel like not a whole lot happened in this book? Like I skim-read through the end because I really lost interest...

This would have been a full 4 star book for me if it wasn’t the rushed ending portion. Within 10 chapters so much happened whereas the beginning of the book was more slowly paced. I enjoyed the story but it’s not an all time favorite.

I really liked this book. Stayed up until 1am on a work night finishing it. Would I recommend it? Probably to a few people. Would I read it again? Probably not. But I thought it was a good read and kept my attention from the start, even if it was a little bit predictable.
