I didn’t know that this was a memoir, I probably wouldn’t have chosen to listen to it if I did. However, it has truly surprised me. At a time when I needed some serious cheering up and some escapism from life for a bit, this audiobook was the perfect antidote.
I cried, I laughed (a lot), I cringed, I felt physically sick and I grimaced. Hayley Morris is unapologetically herself and tells the story of her life through a hilarious mental monologue between herself, “me” and her subconscious, “brain”. She tells things as they are without a filter and that makes for an incredibly powerful memoir. We follow her through life, from childhood, through schools, friendships, first loves, break-ups, awkward encounters, hideously embarrassing work situations, family relationships and death. The full blown Smiler of emotional rollercoasters.
‘Me vs Brain’ is nostalgic and oh so comforting in reminding us what it is to be human in this weird and wonderful modern world of phones and social media.
This may seem like an overstatement but I feel like this book had helped to heal me a bit.
