This is the most comprehensive account of women's roles in history that I've ever seen, and covers such a long time line! It's fascinating to watch trends repeat themselves as they do in our own time. Kudos to Philippa Gregory for including information about women of color, in many ways. It makes me feel, as an American, that british women have not come as far as fast as American women, but there is always something lacking in women's rights.

It felt too much like a list for me to fully sink into the book, also I longed for context setting and an overall summary for each historical time period to pull out themes. E only got that for the chapter on modern women when we are least able to see a larger context and themes!
