This book was unsteady, as I find most of King’s short stories. “Dolan’s Cadillac” was quite good, but my favorite was the last - a nonfiction essay about little league baseball called “Head Down”.
Individual story ratings below—-
Dolan’s Cadillac - 4.5 - (reminded me of Roadwork and 1922)
The End of the Whole Mess - 4.5
Suffer the little children-4
The Night Flyer-3.5 (?4)
Popsy-4-4.5
It grows on you-3 (I don’t think I read it carefully enough, cuz I didn’t get it. )
Chattery Teeth - 5
Dedication - 3 (what the holy f*ck?)
The Moving Finger - 3.5
Sneakers - 2
You Know They’ve Got a Hell of a Band-4.5
Home Delivery-4.5
My Pretty Pony-3.5
Sorry right number-4
The ten o’clock people-5
The house on maple street-4
The fifth quarter-4
The Doctors Case-3.5
Umney’s Last Case-3.75
Head Down-no- I stopped here, save for a little skimming. I have no interest in baseball essays. Though I did read most of the notes section and enjoyed those.

2.5 stars. The .5 is for the gratitude I felt completing it.
A disappointing collection of average stories that failed to capture my attention. Aside from The House on Maple Street, I would have enjoyed none of the works in this collection.

Personally, at times, I think people forget that Stephen King is capable of writing great short stories. Moreover, in my opinion, there are some short stories which are better than some of his full length novels (in fact, I could name quite a few I wish had been full length novels rather than short stories).
Much like with his full length novels, I find his short stories to flicker between extremes. There are those that I really love and those I find myself working through for the sake of finding out what happens at the end. At least with the short stories I am not wasting hours of my time (as I did when reading Dreamcatcher which, sadly, really is my least favourite King novel).
In many ways, due to this, I feel as though people would do well to start with his short stories. If you’re unsure as to whether you want to jump into the world of Stephen King or not, reading one of his short stories is a good place to start. There are many books I could easily throw in your direction, but a shorter one would do well for those trying to decide whether or not Stephen King is for them.
As for which one his collection of short stories to go for… well, any of them will do nicely.

Enjoyable collection of short stories from King. Not many stand out ones other than The House on Maple Street (very Ray Bradbury) and The Night Flier.
Read along with the Audiobook which pushed this to 4 stars due to the cast of people reading some of these shorts. I particularly enjoyed Tim Curry reading The Doctor's Case which sees King touch on the legendary Sherlock Holmes.
Overall a nice collection of stories of varying genre but always leaning towards the horror that King is rightly famous for.

Over the course of a year and a half, finally finished this book!
This volume is a really good example of King's eclectic style, and how excellent he is at creating tension. (Especially good reads if you're having trouble falling asleep)
Although some of them are incredibly excellent, most of them are a bit of a slow-burn that take too long to get to the point to the point I would sometimes skip them. I'd say 75% of them were real good, while the other 25% were kind of misses for me personally.
The best stories in the book in my opinion were: Dolan's Cadillac, The End of This Whole Mess, Suffer the Little Children, Popsy, Chattery Teeth, The Doctor's Case, and Umney's Last case.
The best thing by far is also King's introduction and notes at the end of the book, where he gives anecdotes regarding the creation of some of the short stories and what inspired him to write them.
TL;DR: A set of incredibly imaginative short stories that make you legitimately tense.
