In some ways, this is a useful introductory text to the Soviet Union, at least in the early years. In other ways, this is a book that the normal reading public should ignore. Suny provides an incredibly useful introduction to the historiography of the Soviet Union. But he does use a plethora of academic verbiage that the average reader would find hard to swallow.
