I think for what this book is, a cute romance between two young men, it is a good one. I understand the hype, completely.
I think the reason why I didn’t give it five stars it is because of the political aspect of the story. It feels like an outsider point of view of the US politics and Royal Family, rather than being inside them as Alex and Henry are. I am no expert in the matter, I don’t even share nationalities with them, but I rarely felt they were in the world they claimed to be. For instances, I think this would have work better if the campaign was for an election rather than a re-election.
Also, the way things are handled are too idealistic for being politics. Things go wrong, yes, but they get resolved easier that one would expect. I wouldn’t say it is unrealistic because there is no way to know how it would actually go down if something like Alex and Henry’s relationship happened in real life. I think it was way to obvios how their political backgrounds serve more as a literary device for the prompt to work. (Alex being Mexican-American had way more impact than he being the First Son, sometimes).
On the other side, I think my biggest highlight of the story is the characters and how they interact with each other. The autor made a really good job in making them independent and memorable, each one of them. I cared about all of them throughout the whole story.
Now, I think the reason why this book is carried by its characters is fanfiction. And I don’t mean it in a bad way. Almost all that I did last year was to read fanfiction religiously. And I think that is why it stood up to me so much, because I am so used to it. And one thing that ff authors like to do is deeply explore their characters and their relationships. You can see them grow and develop themselves as you read, and it is so nice.
But yeah, I need my Henry, please.
