I was afraid of reading this book for a long time, but it was considerably easier to read than I thought. Worth all the hype, potentially one of the best books I’ve ever read.

I need to go fight a bear in the woods or something. Not too sure how to articulate my feelings about this book at the moment, but I do in fact have feelings. AAAHHH???????

The episodic feel of each chapter really made it a page-turner for me. Raskolnikov's journey through insanity paired with all the memorable scene, all nicely wrapped under an interesting analysis of what makes people great and what allows them to be great?

Crime and Punishment is kind of a chore to get through, but it's very well-written. I don't love the lengthy philosophical discussions Dostoevsky tends to sandwich in the middle of his stories, but without them, the stories as a whole wouldn't be as profound.

I enjoyed the theme that avoiding punishment for one's crime causes more stress and damage to the person than just accepting the punishment to begin with. Also loved that Raskolnikov's confession doesn't come out until nearly the last line of the book—the buildup is so well done.

The details of the crime were revealed early, and despite that it was a suspenseful, gripping read. This was a fascinating psychological thriller and for being a classic, it was for the most part very readable. The characters were complex and had really interesting arcs. I appreciated the exploration of where crime and mental illness stems from and its subsequent consequences. However, I am not sure why the ending was abrupt; I wanted to see how and why Raskolnikov falls in love and why this is the start of his redemption arc.
