While it's not the best book ever, I really like it and it sets up the world really well and in a very digestible way

by the end of this book i was kind of hate reading it, which is saying something because i consider myself a pretty benevolent reviewer.
first things first, the good parts: i loved the level of diversity in this book, i feel like that’s not always the case in fantasy. i thought the side characters were fun, wish we saw more of them. and, conceptually, i thought it was good world building.
my issues with the book come down to poor writing, lack of pacing and the sheer level of predictability. the foreshadowing was so heavy handed i was rolling my eyes. the author seems allergic to using the sequence, “____ said”. and, for a romantasy, i did NOT care about the main romance. they rushed into the feelings aspect and then basically for 75% of the book it was like “hale is so hot but we can’t do anything wahhh.” and the sex scenes weren’t redeeming either! only like four and they were short and BORINGGGGG

Gotta love a book that makes you laugh, and that's just the dedication.
I was looking forward to reading this book since I bought it. It would call to me through October, "Read me!" and now I have, and I could honestly read it again! I enjoyed this book immensely, it gave strong ACOTAR vibes with the multiple court dynamic. I also loved the magic system with different types of magic assigned to a colour, kinda bummed my favourite colour was extinct though.
The character were so well written, with a great bond between Hale (the MMC) and his cadre of friends but also with Remy (the FMC), Heather, and Fenrin. The growth of Remy into being able to fend for herself with the help of Bri and Carys, was so empowering to read. Not to mention the queer representation! It captured my queer little heart.
The third act twist though! I can usually sense them coming, but this time...NOPE! It hooked me to the point I HAD to keep reading to see how the story ended. By the time I was done, I had cried both happy and sad tears.
And going back to the dedication, chapters 23 and 24...LOVED THEM! After multiple instances of an interrupting door knock, A.K. Mulford knows how to tease, I finally got to the "payoff". Not super spicy, but appropriately spicy. Give a one horse trope (and a tree) any day!

Not great, awkward writing didn’t flow well and odd magic system - hard to get hooked. Why are there colors assigned to the witches? Weird incontinuities like only listing 4 witch colors and then later saying there were 5? Or maybe I wasn’t interested enough to count again. Remy’s age is not really mentioned but I think she’s like mid 20s? Anyway she’s annoying and the writing makes her sound very much like a sheltered stubborn who picks fights for fun and talks like she’s dictating her own fan fiction. The love interest isn’t very interesting or novel.

A bit slow and not a lot happens the first half of the book. The fmc is stubborn to her own detriment. The plot twists were obvious if you were paying attention. The banter was great and it had its sweet moments. They spent a lot of the book traveling which got a bit tedious. World building needs improvement. I would recommend this book if the above doesn’t bother you!
