Took me while to finish and it was slow at times but you totally can see why this is a classic.
wow this was a tedious read. it was overwritten and the unnatural writing made it feel like a chore. on top of that, the story ended so abruptly. i powered through this book only to get no payoff whatsoever :( the last few pages were great though, almost enough to make it 4 stars
I absolutely adored this book. It gave a scary look into a future where women are merely vessels to have children and are good for no other purpose. The language the author uses draws you to the main character with a very strong emotional attachment.

This book always makes me reflect on our own time, and it makes my heart ache to the point that I can usually not finish it.

I expected all things dark and depraved. I expected violence, despair, and pain. What I did not expect were the delicate moments of Atwood's prose that convey such a deep sense of hopelessness that it completely and utterly shattered my soul. I've never truly imagined what it would be like to be without the ability to write down my thoughts. It will take awhile before I recover from envisioning that kind of reality.
When I think about the dystopian conditions in Handmaid's Tale (which are only a "follow-it-to-the-end" version of disturbing religious ideologies held today) I don't just think about the incredible horror it is to lose all agency, but also the great loss as a result of dimming a woman's brilliance. Women are meant to write. They're meant to spread awareness and create, even if we just have to tell the tale in our heads.
