This book is the third in the Bill Hodges trilogy (by Stephen King), which follows what happens to Bill Hodges in the time after his last big murder investigation (where a lunatic decides to drive a car into a crowd of people -hence the title of the first book, Mr Mercedes), and subsequent retirement.

This book returns to the villain of the original book, who has learned how to astrally project, enter the minds of other, and do what he's always wanted to do. Only Bill Hodges, and his sidekicks are the sort who know that Brady Hartsfield can do this, so it's down to them to save the day.

This is a weird book. The previous 2 in the series are fairly straightforward mysteries, while this book takes a left turn into the supernatural. In a way it reminds me of the film Patrick, coupled with the Dean Koontz book, about a mechanical house, which is a shame. because it's a fun read, that rattles along at a good rate, once it gets going.

This was far and away my favorite book of this trilogy. I liked the first one, although it took me a bit to get into it. I was not very happy at all with the second one. This third one? Absolutely hit all of the right notes and had THE most satisfying ending of any book I've read in a long time.

A fitting ending to a great trilogy. I must say, as a middle-aged, introverted woman, that Holly Gibney is one of my favorite Stephen King characters. Perhaps she will appear in future novels. The main character, Bill Hodges, is the same age as the author, and is, in this novel, facing his "End of Watch." Let us hope that Mr. King has many more years ahead to provide us with great literary entertainment. 4.5 stars. Recommend.

I didn't read the other books... which is maybe why I didn't enjoy this one as much.
