Haunting Adeline

I've heard such good things about this book from a horror group and was excited to read this. Unfortunately, the writing was utterly ridiculous. Addie is "falling in love" with her stalker despite him breaking into her home and taking advantage of her sexually. She continuously notes that she is self-aware that she is stupid and making poor decisions in initiating contact with her dangerously violent stalker. The reason given for these choices? He is oh so sexy and knows how to work a clit. Come on!! Why do women have to be written this way? She lacked any redeeming qualities. The novel also tries to show the depth of the stalker's character because, while he treats Addie like garbage, he rescues kidnapped and sex trafficked individuals for work. (So, he's not a completely bad guy!) I don't think I have ever rolled my eyes this hard from reading a book. Apparently, this is the first in a series, but I can't rationalize subjecting myself to another chapter with these characters.

I was really bored during the story. I didn't find either of the storylines very engaging. I felt the main characters were flat.

Reviews for this are somehow full of annoyed people who apparently didn’t get the memo on this genre or read the warnings? I liked this book a lot, particularly the writing style. It started off a little slow, only a little, but really started to grip me and I couldn’t put it down.

There was SO much trauma in this book. Ohmygod. I really didn’t know if it would get better.

This. Book. Is. Dark.

Like actually; read the fucking trigger warnings.

"I dare you, Adeline. Deny that my name isn't carved into every star you see when I make you come, and I will show you that a God can create them just as easily as he can destroy them.”

Okay, that wasn’t as fucked up as I thought it would be? Does that mean that I’m fucked up?
