Is the prose flowery and dense at times? Yes. The writing, however, is still well done. The Salt Grows Heavy consumed me during the 2.4 hours it took for me to read it. It’s short-it’s sweet (besides the gore and body horror lol) and I genuinely enjoyed the atmosphere and tone. This book was weakest in its final act but still left me satisfied overall.

I am going to recommend this to people if they are looking for a Halloween read- as it’s spooky and bloody but (personally) didn’t gross or freak me out like some other horror novels.

Although very short, this book has a lot of interesting plot points and I liked how it included lots of mythology from different regions.

I wish this book was longer because I think the characters are very interesting. Overally this book is a little creepy and gory so it's perfect for Halloween season! However the language is a little flowery so it can be hard to understand the imagery at some points.

Not my ass being like “the gore was fun but the story was eh”. Makes me sound crazy but whatever, we love gore in this house. Story was hard to follow a bit + wasn’t grabbing me as much as I wanted it to. Actually probably would be better if it were longer 🫶

A fast read, but a nice one none the less! It was SUPER flowery and I felt like I didn't know what was going on 90% of the time, only to realize ... Yeah. I know whats happening. Its horror, love, and gore wrapped into a nice 100 pages. What's not to love?

I love this book so freaking much I bought it in both the British and US hardcover editions because they have different artwork. I have never felt the need to own more than one copy of the same book in my entire life. I prefer library and ebooks! But I am seriously not kidding when I say it has been YEARS since I have read something that has sent my imagination spiraling off in so many directions. I've dreamed up sequels and backstories for everyone and pondered so many questions of identity, gender and sexuality, the nature of gods and monsters, and so much more. I've been begging, begging, begging my book club to choose The Salt Grows Heavy but instead we keep getting crap like Delilah Green Doesn't Care.
