I think it definitely should come with trigger warnings —that’s on me though for not checking.

It was very descriptive, there is a lot of body horror, like…a lot. I definitely found myself shocked and gagging while reading; while the characters and world are fascinating and I might be interested in more about it, I don’t think the character development was enough to make me care as much as I could have? It is a beautifully poetic, grisly—also in a poetic and purposeful way, story though.

i didn't like this at all. yes, the themes of unconditional love are beautiful but everything else about this did nothing for me

This book is overwrought.

The effect of the prose was lost on me; I had to physically stop myself from tallying how many times the author used the word “viscera” throughout the entire text.

Maybe the audiobook format didn’t do it justice, but a lot of what I disliked about this story could’ve probably been fixed by a vicious editor.

But, I digress. It’s got guts and gore, if that’s what you’re into. What’s done is done.

Before this year, I would not have really put myself out there as someone who reads or enjoys a lot of horror/thriller kinds of books, but these are the kinds of reads that make me rethink that.

This is a feminine rage, what happens after-the-fact piece. Very quick to get through, though a bit disturbing. Or at least it has the potential to be that to some.

If you are someone with any sensitivities while reading, I would highly advise you to read the content warnings on this book before you pick it up!

I just wanted more

I had to read the first few pages a couple times to get used to the writing style. Once that happened it did have a unique beauty to it. The conversation between the mermaid and the plague doctor was easily the best part. It was gruesome at times but it added to the atmosphere.

The use of words not often used in everyday life was overwhelming. It’s fine if there a word here and there, I can usually decipher what it means by the surrounding text but dang 2-3 words every sentence or so? Sheesh.

Not for everyone, but I loved it. There's a vague echo of The Little Mermaid twisted into this dark fairytale, but this is definitely for adults (with strong stomachs) only. The writing is dense, so I listened to the audiobook twice. I liked it even better the second time around.
