The prose is so purple it's almost black. The happenings in this story are so black they almost turn purple. Khaw stitches together Andersen's Little Mermaid and the Three Army Surgeons from the Brothers Grimm with a skillful hand. The critics might, and do, say that Khaw practices a lot of tell instead of show and that the prose looks like a product of someone who swallowed up the Thesaurus. And sure, it's hard to argue with that. But do I need to? The telling is vivid and atmospheric, and the prose lends the piece a dreamy, or perhaps a deliciously nightmarish quality.
