Read like a pitch for a longer fantasy book rather than a complete story. I liked the writing style, but it felt like the author depended on vagueness to increase the tension instead of fleshing out the lore. I’m guessing it’s intentional and not due to lack of ability, but I think this could have been so much better!

REALLY enjoyed this one! Wished it went on a little longer (I didn’t realize just how short it would be!) but the writing is beautiful and it was phenomenally grotesque. I wish we got to see more of the plague doctor’s and the mermaid’s relationship develop, since they seemed so in love but there wasn’t a ton of evidence to back it up. But hey, it’s a novella and the author did well with how short the story was!
This was such a strange, creepy book and it was exactly the mood I needed. A mermaid and a plague doctor moving through the forest, full of body horror and dense prose. I wanted to keep pausing reading this but told myself to just read a littleeeee bit more and then it was wrapping up.
