Juuust my kind of horror. Gruesome and unforgiving, with beautiful writing. It was wonderfully brutal, with lots of body horror, which I really enjoy. My only complaint, is, as usual, on the romance that develops suuuper fast between the MC and the Plague Doctor. It's hard for me to believe in unshaken devotion of this level for people who've known each other well such a short time. It was still an incredibly well crafted fantasy horror novella. Loved it.

2.5/5

Okay so I found the premise of this novella absolutely mesmerising except I didn’t really buy in on the love story, if we want to call it that, and then the ending wasn’t particularly impactful and the rest of the story fell short.
I really wish she stayed a beautiful monstrous men eating mermaid till the very end, I wish she stayed cold and alien and I wish she went back to the deep instead of what actually happened in that awful awful epilogue.

A short story with a big punch! Such a beautifully written story and was surprised how I much I enjoyed

“Mermaid. A word that demonstrates the ineptitude of human language, and the species’ predisposition for infantilizing the unknown. I have seen the woodcuts, the illustrations, the portraits of bare-breasted women with voluptuous tails, both equally ill-suited for the deep water. But palatability is prized over accuracy. It is easier to market a nymph than a viperfish.”

Not one of my favourite retellings - I don’t particularly care for body horror and I think the story was too short to really get into the history of what was going on, it felt like it was lacking. There were however some good tidbits:

“It is always interesting to see how often women are described as ravenous when it is the men who, without exception, take without thought of compensation.”

“Man mistakes his own experiences as the canvas on which all truths are drawn. He is rarely correct in this respect.”

This book sure was hard on the stomach.

It's a horror retelling of the little mermaid, with an unapologetically inhuman main character and an Enby plague doctor encountering a cult of children in the woods

There is so much Gore in this, it's almost the main selling point. If you can't handle detailed descriptions of people being cut open and taken apart, skip this one.

The writing was atmospheric, if a bit empty, but it was a short story, so you can't expect the same depth as you do from a three-book-series.

The characters were great, with the monstrous side of all of them showing, along with their painfully human inhumanity.

The worldbuilding was vague yet fascinating, and I think if the author writes more books in the same world, there could be a proper world behind that.

So yeah. Uncomfortable read, but that's what you get into with horror.
