EEEEEE! That's how I feel when I think about this book. The author did such a great job painting this story. The autism rep in this book was raw, engaging, and I learned so much. Highly recommend.

As an autistic person who didn’t see rep like this growing up, I wanted to like this book so badly. YA with an autistic MC? And she’s a girl and a PoC? Hell yeah. But I am shocked my eyes didn’t get stuck rolling up into my head, or that I didn’t cause an accident banging my head on my steering wheel out of pure frustration listening to the audiobook while driving. Jessie is unbearably annoying about her crushes. Levi sucks. Griffin was mostly fine I guess except the “you’re not autistic cuz you don’t act like my nonverbal brother” moment. Jessie just felt so stereotypically infatuated, and like 80% of the book was just her pining and being super dense. Also her being ashamed of being autistic until the last like two seconds of the book was kind of a bummer. And while autism is a spectrum, her autistic traits just seemed more… talked about, rather than shown. She wears headphones sometimes and has trouble with social cues. But like. She barely stims. She doesn’t have meltdowns or get overwhelmed. There isn’t much talk about sensory issues. Etc. And obviously all autistic people are different and not everyone does/experiences all those things. But it would have been nice to see more of them. Anyway. The writing itself was pretty good and I would try another of this author’s books in the future. But this one was disappointing and torturously annoying.

OH MY GOD this was everything!!!!! I absolutely devoured this, and if I wouldn’t have started it late in the evening I would have finished it in one sitting. The story was so wonderfully crafted, the characters were so delightfully awkward and really embodied the spirit of early high school. I am so excited for whatever books Khalilieh writes next.
