Never having read anything by this author, I didn’t know what to expect. The genre(s) was/were also a bit of a departure for me. It had the feel of a pulp noir novel with an element of fantasy mixed in. Neil Gaiman comes closest in my experience as a reader. But Jim Butcher’s story was lighter, more empathetic, and humorous. A great introduction to a new type of book for me. I’ll be back for more.

Quite a cute short story, and I feel you get to see a more optimistic Harry here.

When Harry Met Murphy. What's not to like?

With all due respect to Jim Butcher and his feelings that he had to apologize for this short story, but he's silly to think that a Dresden fan wouldn't love it. It is clearly not his best, let's not kid ourselves, but it's short, fun, and we get a quick Harry fix. Plus, let's be honest, we all wanted to know how his best friend Murphy came into his life.

I just adore this series.

Fun little (very) short story that gives the reader a peek at how Dresden met Murphy. Enjoyable.

Great story, loved meeting Dresden for the first time! Can't wait to read more!

Short, fun little story about Harry Dresden rescuing a runaway kid and fighting with a troll. Most notable for the first meeting between him and Murphy, I believe. It's not very complex but it's still enjoyable, and the dissolution of the troll body is suitably weird.
