Short story, introducing Harry Dresden, where he rescues a little girl who ran away from home and defends her from a troll, with the help of an astonished cop, who turns out to be named Murphy!
A quick little introduction story to Harry Dresden. It also first introduces us to Murphy. I wish this first meeting had of been more in depth, but it was still enjoyable. At least Harry didn't describe Murphy only using sexual terminology as he typically does when he describes any female he pretty much comes across...which gets very annoying...
This was a fun short story about how Dresden and Murphy first met.
Short & quick and pretty fun.
A very interesting - and a bit disgusting - run-in with a troll and lots of characters briefly introduced. I can’t wait to see who else is going to be in the main series, apart from Harry Dresden.
As a side note, Santa Claus exists and I couldn’t be happier

Cute short story. I am not familiar with the series, and as an introduction, I kind of like it. A bit too much on the nose, but as mentioned in the preface, it is a very old short story. Looking forward to reading the series.
This was a good quick short story. Not great or well developed but obviously a first attempt at the world we will get to know better in the Dresden novels.
Harry is hired, through the detective agency he works for, to find and bring back a run away. When he gets a hold of her in a very bad part of town, his boss calls him off the case and tells him to set her free. Why? this leaves Dresden in the dubious position of help the girl (12 or 14 year-old) out of the hell hole slum, or go against his bosses orders and best recommendations.
This short introduces readers to Harry and his sense of duty, and how everything seems to turn and bite him in the ass. Still after the bite, he seems to be able to pry the mandible apart and escape to heal another day.
