I love Brene's work. I read Rising Strong at a point in my life when I needed it most. Every chapter had a truth and poignancy that struck a chord with me. I was not, however, truly moved by Braving the Wilderness. If you love great one liner motivational quotes, then this is a great book. If you want to be briefly inspired to by human stories, then this is a great book. If you want general advice on how to not get so angry with other people, then this is a great book. But if you were hoping to get real insight on HOW to really be yourself, despite humans needing community, then you will likely be left wanting more. If the goal was to help people understand what belonging to yourself means, what it looks like, and how to achieve it, then I think she fell short. Not because she isn't capable or doesn't know herself but because she didn't take the time and care that she has with past books. Brown knows how to deliver an emotional punch but the research she is so passionate about was noticeably missing from this book compared to her others. I don't think she's spent enough time collecting data to help us see where we are and help us figure out how to get where we want to go. I understand using our current political climate as a perfect example for the crisis of dehumanization and disconnection, but where are the stories and data that show people who have not fallen in this trap. Where's the data about what they do and how they view these traps? There's many countries in the world that have been divided so why isn't there more research around the people who have fallen into the trap of false belonging and those who managed to see those traps and avoid them? The answer can't be "recognize bullshit" and just "set boundaries." While Brown's message is still a good one and her work is still fabulous this book was a bit of a let down compared to the others. I would still read it for those few great nuggets, but it wasn't as powerful and that's what I was expecting (which may or may not be fair).

This is a quick read, but it has such meaning and power behind every word. Great advice and can't wait to read more books by her.
