So bloody wholesome!

I wanted to give this book a 5…so much of it was so perfect for spring and brimming with magic but the really heavy handed “lesson” about positive and negative thoughts really brought it down for me (especially in addition to the racism and ableism). I feel it promotes toxic positivity and lacks nuance and parts were even victim-blaming (I.e. saying that a woman got beat up by her drunk husband because she repeatedly said her husband was a drunken brute…the exact words were that she MADE HIM beat her!!! And had she said nice things he wouldn’t have gotten drunk but got her a new bonnet). It almost feels in the realm of the law of attraction and new age spirituality 🙄

I wish it was just about being out in the garden and the magic of nature because those parts were great but it’s hard to separate those parts from the truly toxic parts. So I’m torn between loving and hating it 😢

started to feel like a chore reading it. this was not the lighthearted, whimsical tale i was expecting. i fear this book might be a tad overrated, aside from the constant racism and ableism.

I read this book as a child and liked it a lot. Rereading it as an adult reminded me why I liked to read. It’s interesting to see how much literature has changed!

I expected to like this book. All the most popular reviews have pretty high ratings, or at least 3 stars. Everyone is all over this classic, and since I enjoy most classics from the early 1900s, I thought I would be, too.

This book is boring and sugary sweet. I read over half of it before I put it down for good. Everything is conveyed through the eyes of a narrator I don't particularly like--an untitled, dreamy and dull girl. (I love children, so that's saying a lot.) And nothing happens. I kept reading in the hopes that a plot would show itself, but none did.

Combine all this with the fact that the writing style is all cutesy and I was not having it. Obviously, as a book for children of this time period, it works well. For other readers at any other time, I'm not so sure.
