One of my favourite classics.

It just makes you feel inside the whole way through! FHB writes in beautiful, comforting, easy to read prose. Probably read this once every couple of months when I was a child!

I've had this on my list of classics TBR for a long time. Listened to the audiobook read by Johanna Ward and it was so lovely to listen to her voice and accent throughout. It's definitely a story of it's time, with moralistic messages for children and adults alike and an ending that was pretty well laid out and expected from early on. It was nonetheless, a very satisfying read (listen) and a special little world created by the author.

Love this book! Read it with the girls over the summer then we went to see it in Logan.

As I reread classics, I find language and racism problematic. It is definitely a point of discussion as we read aloud, and I have to decide if the message and beauty of the story are worth continuing to read.

the first half was intriguing, but i wish it embraced its inherent mystery to develop conflict through the second half. the last chapter was divorced from the rest of the story as it is from a different character’s perspective whom we have only heard brief mentions of.
