Childhood favorite as a movie. I never realized the whole bit at the end of the movie where all the kids come back after a war was not in the book. Still just as I remember it though. Highly recommended for anyone with preteen children who love you reading to them!

The Secret Garden is a children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published in 1911. It's a story of life lessons, nurturing your spirit, and find your own secret garden where you can be at peace and heal your soul. The book was written for children but the passages in the book has something for everyone. It is worth the time to read this classic.

I thought this book was really cute! I really liked the ending because of the hopeful mood that it left me with. I think it would do most people good to read this book. The only things I didn't like were the occasional racist parts, but I guess it's just because of the time this was written.

Overall it’s a story of hope and the power of positive thinking, exercise, outdoors, and friends. I grew up watching the 1993 movie but I’ve never read the book. Honestly the movie is pretty on point, there are a couple of details that are different but overall I’d say this is one of the few times where they’re on par with each other. The book was written a long time ago so the way they refer to people of color, even those from India as “blacks” is a little cringey but that isn’t in the movie.

This is my 7th time reading this, I think, and I didn't enjoy this as much as I did in times past. I think the character of Colin and his ultra-feminine melodrama just got to me this time and didn't seem realistic. I was also really bugged when the author said something like, "the kids had a great time and grew a lot in the garden; but if you've never had a garden, you wouldn't understand." Isn't that the point of the story --- to show the reader how beautiful and transforming this garden was? So now my whole reading of this story is pointless because I can't exactly picture this fantastic garden? Talk about pretentious.

I don't know... maybe I just wasn't in the mood.
