This holds up on its own terms as a children's classic. It's also very interesting from the point of view of genre, mixing elements of the gothic with those of the didactic story.

Oh yeah, okay, this one is genuinely charming and lovely. Love the gradual transformation of the main characters, gently and considerately done so that it feels so real. A proper pleasure (especially as I had gardening to do on the sunny balcony!)
