A great story of how the simplest things can help cure loneliness or a broken heart. Things like gardens, childhood friendships, animals, and food. Also acknowledgement of how mental health is just as important as physical health. Having said all that, it is EXTREMELY important to review trigger/content warnings as this book is very much a product of its time. There is body shaming, racism, ableism, colonialism, child neglect, and death, just to name a few.

I first picked up this book as a child because of the beautiful illustrations in the edition I had, but it is the captivating (if at times spooky) story of Mary Lennox that has stuck with me through the years. I think I mostly enjoyed reading about a little girl who wasn’t perfect or proper.
Read with the 'Lets Get Classical' Book Club. Enjoyed it but not my fave children's story!

The Secret Garden is a super great book. I read it awhile ago and it is really heart warming. I think that the movie they made of it is also really good. People should read the book and then watch the movie.
