DONE!

This review has been a long time coming. Between first purchasing the book nearly 3 years ago to now, I think I've read the entire contents of the book about 5 times just spoiling sections for myself and jumping ahead to read parts I remembered from the show. But finally, FINALLY, I finished reading it once all the way through.

I really loved this book. Outlander sparks controversy frequently - whether it be debates about its genre (historical fiction, fantasy, romance - maybe just pure smut), or some of the trigger-warning content (sexual violence, rape, torture), everyone seems to have a different opinion of it. My opinion: a beautifully crafted, well-researched novel following the gut-wrenching romance between Claire and Jamie. While certainly an intense (and at times uncomfortable) read, it was well worth it (well almost... everything except chapter 39... for which I can find utterly no reason for those extra, unnecessary, ugly pages... which almost dropped my rating a full star...)

The writer, a former academic, tells the story in exquisite detail that transports you to the past. There are few books that keep you in the story so well, particularly for those as long and as convoluted as this. I say convoluted in the best way possible - all the side tangents and extraneous adventures only added to my connection with the characters and to the richness of the setting. I swear, the only reason it took me so long to finish was because I was too invested in the characters to read about the sad scenes I knew were coming.

Now, I am wondering where my Outlander journey will take me next. I love the story, and I desperately want to read where life takes our characters in the sequel. But I also know that the ending of this book wraps everything up so nicely in a neat little bow. I normally can't stand when a book like this ends and voraciously read the next. But for these characters, it almost feels cruel to keep reading tales of them falling together and apart and together again, and I almost want to live in the blissful ignorance of their happily ever after of this second novel.

Who knows though - I may very well change my mind in the morning and start the second book. For now, though, I'll leave the next 3 books on my want-to-read list and share the praises of this riveting read (and the show) with anyone who will listen. :)
