This book is my Ithaca because it also took me, at least, ten years to finally reach it. And I’m glad that I waited so long and that it wasn’t my first Steinbeck.
It doesn’t feel like fiction, this despair, it’s much too tender for that. Ten years before, I would have missed it; the dignity, the grace tucked like a pocket alongside all that suffering.

I loved this and am not sure how I got through high school without reading it.

Well written and has incredible insight/commentary on life in the United States during the depression. However, I hated it. Also the end was gross.

Would’ve been 3.5 or maybe even 4 but what the actual — was the ending?

This is THE great American novel. Best depiction of the heart of America I’ve read in any novel ever. Steinbeck’s meditations on alienation of labour, union-busting, and treatment of migrants ring true to modern political contexts (which is horrifying). Only reason I can’t give this a full 5 is because I’ve read east of Eden and it’s just un-toppable
