I wish I'd read this before East of Eden! It doesn't match up at all! It felt so dry. I don't need hours spent on fixing a truck. I don't care.
The family relationships also felt barely developed. I wanted to know how they all felt about and talked to one another, not just Ma.
The writing was still very evocative though and John Steinbeck writes children really well.
Uncle John was a little bitch I'm afraid to say

I did like the book. It definitely speaks of its time, and that the author is male. There are many references to its time, that show the deep rooted racism of America. The characters as well seem all too happy to condone casual domestic violence.

I liked the complexities of each character however, that show each as a flawed individual looking to do the best they can in the most extreme of bad circumstances. The book does a good job of showing the callous nature of American capitalism, many times characterising it as some immovable force that cannot be tackled. It gave me a little insight about the mindset of people who look around for something to blame and something to fight, yet cannot see anyone, so turn to other forces to explain why. I liked the philosophising generally.
