This story takes place in the Jonquil world (as it directly follows Marion and Layton’s story) following Marion’s cousin Miles, but not part of the series and is a great stand alone. For four year Miles has been searching for his long-lost childhood friend and “ward” Elise, and is shocked to find her begging for scraps at the Draper’s in a small town far from home! She is much changed, and while only 19, she has a daughter. As events unfold, the mystery of who killed their fathers, why Elise left, and if happily ever after is even possible keep readers engaged to the very end. So much heartache and heartbreak in this story, as well as hope. Always hope.
