A fast moving intelligence plot. Plan to continue with the series.
I heard an interview with the author on Minnesota Public Radio, so for some reason I thought it would be more literary. It's not. It's kind of silly. Everything is superlative--the most beautiful woman, the best art restorer, the greatest assassin, the most dangerous terrorist. A lot of fun, though. I'll probably read some more of these, as they're great escapism for hot weather. I'm also curious to see how 9/11 affects future books.
I read The English Girl earlier this year and loved it and figured I should go back and read all the other Gabriel Allon novels from the beginning. Best reading decision I've made in AGES!

mysterious
fast-paced

I really enjoyed this book. Interesting characters, a plot that moves along and a fun read. Since I don't read a lot of spy books I can't really compare it to others in the genre but I can say I will continue with this series.
The first in this series that is now up to 19 or 20 books. The characters are drawn well so that the reader can easily imagine them and understand their background and motives. The plot moves at a good pace and has some nice twists. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.
The thing that I love about Silva's writing - no bullshit digressions. Simply a spy novel, with just enough background info scenes for each relevant character and each of those scenes are there for a reason!
I really needed something fun, easy to read but at the same time intriguing! And I got it.
This man writes about the cities these characters visit like a person who's lived there all their lives. You see parts of those cities you never knew existed, but he presents them as a side note, not as a massive pages-long digression. Just enough to interest you and to last you until the character arrives at the place they set off for.
And even with the "spy stuff" he is basic in a good way. There's a scene where Gabriel is trying to "bug" this guy's apartment and he doesn't wax poetically about the intricacies of setting up a perfect complete surveillance. He goes in, changes the old phone with the new one with the bug in it, disconnects the cord of the receiver to the phone because the new one would feel too new, and moves on!
The book is interesting, fast paced, and fun.
And another plus for this book - the plot is not so complicated that you have to make notes just to keep up with who is following whom or shit like that.
Go read it!
