Overall I really liked this collection.
The theme under which they have all been collected, Men Without Women, is a compelling idea and each story really explores the concept from quite different angles. In genre, tone, and style, these stories give a glimpse into what a 'man without a woman' means, especially from the mind of Murakami.
Kino is my favorite story of this collection and I could honestly see myself returning to it again. The deployment of horror was quite surprising to me and I'd love to see if he has explored that genre elsewhere.
Unfortunately I would say the titular story is my least favorite, it truly felt like the only story in which Murakami himself didn't quite grasp what he was wanting to say. It felt like seeing through an unexpected fog, and I feel there was something there left unfinished, and not in a purposeful way.
This has made me excited to venture more into Murakami's work especially his Magical Realism novels.

Drive My Car, Kino, and Yesterday are the strong standouts of the bunch.
“Words, they felt, could only cheapen the emotions they were feeling.”
“So in the end maybe that’s the challenge: to look inside your own heart as perceptively and seriously as you can, and to make peace with what you find there. If we hope to truly see another person, we have to start by looking within ourselves.”

Anyway, my top 3 stories from this book was Drive My Car, Yesterday, and An Independent Organ.

I liked the concept, and the cool reserved voice of the narrator. But Murakami's pictures of life are not too pleasant to look on at length.
A nice little collection of stories. My first time reading Murakami's work and I really enjoyed his writing. The stories were all quite different, some very unique, yet with that same theme running throughout of a feeling of loss due to women. Some I liked more than others, but overall they have definitely convinced me to read more of his work.
an independent organ crushed me into pieces:)it’s also my fav story!
