Often as a woman I wonder what goes on in the heads of men . Turns out ,once the layers of toxic masculinity and patriarchy wear off they too are emotional creatures just trying to get through the day. The book has different types of encounters between Men and Women and topped off by Murakami's distinct style of description it's a treat. Much of the book deals with the loss of prominent female figures in the life of men and how they are trying to cope with the void these women left behind. It's a good book for trying to understand the other side of the story and definitely worth a read for all the men as they won't feel alone in their journyes of love life and loss.

I couldn't quite grasp the idea of the book at first β€“ simply bought it after seeing that it was largely based off of gender norms in society, which turned out to be a lot less explicit, but also quite explicit, throughout the book.

I enjoyed this book. That said, I approached it thinking it would be more representational. This is no way takes away from the book as I thoroughly enjoyed reading the selection of short stories written by Murakami.

It's okay! I usually prefer collections of short stories to novels but this one just didn't provide the same satisfaction that his other books did.

I have been dipping in and out of this collection and though Murakami is a favorite, I abandoned halfway through.

unbearably vapid descriptions of every female character.

I love how Murakami can create characters and worlds in which I am immediately hooked and excited to see exactly where the story goes. Normally, I struggle with short stories, but these felt complete and fully developed. However, there are times where Murakami writes something slightly questionable; the biggest examples of this appear in β€˜An Independent Organ,’ in which anorexia is only reserved for females (obviously untrue) and all women have an impulsive need to lie. Nevertheless, I enjoyed these stories and the characters within them.
