This book got me out of a year long reading slump and into a reading obsession!!!

A must read. Josie is an incredible character with an amazing story. The historic background really brings 1950 New Orleans to life. Sepetys is a wonderful author. Once you pick this book up it is so difficult to put down. Like, I'm dead serious pick this book up and read it. The heart-wrenching drama and mystery within this book can either kill you or bring you to tears. For me it did both. Honestly, just read the book.

Good book! I actually enjoyed this one more than "Between Shades of Gray." While there are some hard and disturbing things, the plot is not as gut-wrenching as her earlier work. I really enjoy Sepetys readable style. She has a way of writing that engages the reader and compels you to keep reading. I would recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction and stories about improving your life despite being born into terrible circumstances.

I just love Ruta Sepetys so much. In my eyes, she can do no wrong. Like nothing.

I loved reading this book. My heart was just constantly breaking for Josie and it broke even more when her mother broke into her room and just stole her entire life. In all that, I’m just glad she was able to find respectable friends in Willie, Cokie, Patrick, and Jesse. And even Charlotte, really.

I just loved this book so much. It had been on my radar for so long and my library was finally able to get it on their shelves and I just snatched it up.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!!! The characters felt like real people with substance and the main character Josie I felt I could really connect with her character! One of the better books I have read in a long while. I loved the author’s writing style and will definitely be checking out this author’s other works.

Reread - 3.5 stars - This book was not written for me. I don't know why I subjected myself to rereading it, but it was not a favorite. I just reread Salt to the Sea, and loved that one, but this one is completely different. I'm not a huge murder mystery fan, nor am I a huge fan of reading books set in New Orleans in 1950's. While this was well written and an easy read, I just didn't love it. Not to say that I didn't hate it, just didn't love it. Also, I knocked down half a star because the way the book was made, just had the paper shredding all over me.

Original Review - 4 stars -I absolutely loved Between Shades of Grey and Salt to the Sea, so naturally, I was excited to read this book. This book is completely different from those two. I don't normally read books set in the 1950's, and I'm not sure if I would again. While the book was really interesting and kept me reading, it was very predictable, which is why I didn't love it. If you have loved other Sepety's books, or enjoy reading stories set in New Orleans in the 1950's, then I would recommend this book. It is about murder mystery, romance, friendship, and a girl trying to find her place in the world.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for the longest time and it was worth it! The characters are so endearing and unforgettable. Josie is a fighter and strong woman who refuses to give up her dream of going to college despite of her mother’s constant run-ins with the law.
My favorite character was Willie, the Madam, she is such a strong character and a mother figure to both Josie and the girls of the brothel. She is the one that protects Josie even from her mother. I truly loved her relationship with Josie.

I think that the best quality of the book is the relationship between the characters and how it develops through out the book. There were certain thing from the plot that I thought would have had a bigger impact to the story (like the murder). However, that was tertiary to the real plot of the book.
