Great characters. Plot wasn't predictable but certain elements felt like they'd been taken out of a 'How to write a YA novel' guide. Sexy, mysterious boy; friendly boy you've known since childhood; girl with great hair, curves to die for, but still super insecure.
Was really upset when it ended though, and could easily have read two or three more books about them.

Ruta Sepetys is officially a favorite writer of mine. This book has a little bit of everything I love- historical setting, colorful characters, mystery, romance and most importantly a character that you can care about and root for. Not to mention she works at a bookstore (bonus points when the main character is book minded). I loved it!

Not my usual. Thought the dialogue was a bit cheesy and unnatural at times, but couldn't put it down and finished it in two days.
Moderate: Sexual content, Terminal illness, Toxic relationship, Medical trauma
Minor: Child abuse
I have totally been on a Ruta kick. “Out of The Easy” took place in NOLA. All the characters in this book were very colorful and entertaining. After reading “I Must Betray You” this was a VERY different book. Though I found Out of The Easy to be entertaining it was not my favorite Ruta book. One of the things I did not like about this book, is that I felt like bad things kept piling on to the point that was unrealistic even for a historical fiction book. Still if you want a different read about NOLA, this is your book. I still absolute loveee Rita’s writing and in-depth characters.

I listened to this book and thought it was read very well. Interesting story about New Orleans in 1950 with very indepth characters. The author talks a bit at the end about how the story came to life and shared some of her research about New Orleans at that time. I think that would be a very incredible area to delve into if you enjoy historical research.
