Damn the main character really got put through hell.
This book was the definition of a page turner! Out of the Easy is a quick paced story about a girl who had to grow up too fast taking hold of her own destiny. It was witty, beautiful, funny at times, and real. I couldn't put it down!
first book i read by this author in 8th grade and i liked it. It was interesting and I liked it
Overall, an excellent read. The setting and side characters are fleshed out nicely, and the unique foundation upon which the story is built is well thought out. The thing that brought this book down for me, personally, was the half-there romance. It felt fairly rushed and wasn't built up as well as other aspects of the novel. Otherwise, this book was downright fantastic!

I loved the setting of this book-NOLA. the author did a great job at bringing the city to life. I loved Josie, Cokie and Jesse. All the characters were so full of life and had such vibrant personalities even if they were rough. The mystery seemed almost secondary to the relationships that this story was made up of. I loved Al of them even though though I did wish the Josie would have stood up for herself more with her mother. Overall an excellent story.
3.5 stars
I really loved the first half of this book, but I felt like it lost momentum near the end. I wish it would have had a stronger conclusion because I didn't get quite the impact I expected from the build-up.

Read this for a goodreads bookclub read with friends. I had never heard of this book before. The story takes place in the 1950's in New Orleans. The main character Josie is 17 years old and her mom is a prostitute. Even though her mom lived that sort of life the book in my surprise was very mild and clean in nature. Josie lived in a bookstore and worked there as well. I really enjoyed the story and highly recommend it to teens of any age.

3.5; different from some other Sepetys books, this one didn't have the same historical intensity others have had. Although there are elements that are the same from one beloved book to the other: characters you fall in love with, danger, and love. Definitely worth reading
Last year I received a copy of Out of the Easy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Last year was a busy year and I did not get to read all the books that were sent to me. I am desperately trying to make up for the lost time. So here is my review for this book.
This story is about decisions and their impact on someone's life. I was taken right from the beginning. I am a sucker for stories from the 50's filled with mobsters and hope for better days. I was not disappointed. Josie Moraine is a young lady who is trying to find her place in the sun despite all what life has thrown at her. We follow her story in 1950 and her desperate attempts to get out of the Big Easy (The Big Easy is a nickname for New Orleans, if you did not know that). The story is rich with facts about New Orleans and how the people lived in the 50's. The author did not hide the ugliness and beauty of this city; her descriptions were realistic.
Ruta Sepetys did a marvelous job at bringing New Orleans alive. Her characters are at time serious, at time funny, but at always real. This book was whimsical and dramatic at the same time. I really enjoyed reading it!
