4.5. Only that low because I have read both of her other books and they were like 11's out of 5. She is an immensely talented writer. I love her style. Even with a large cast, none of the characters seem unnecessary. The story of Josie's life was beautiful and heartbreaking and I need Ruta Septys to write something new. Stat.

I alternated between print and audio. Did not love the narrator.

Brilliant, amazing, incredible, one of a kind, I'm obsessed
The only thing I'd change about Sepetys' books is to make them ten times longer

Ruta Sepetys is an auto-buy for me but this is the first one of hers that fell flat for me. There never seemed to be any point to the story.

josie and jesse’s relationship alone made me want to give this 5 stars. ruta sepetys really knows how to write romance

I've been waiting, for a book like you.

Yes, I'm singing the Foreigner song.

Seriously though, this book pulled me away from making dinner and washing dishes. It forced me to curl up in my library chair with a large glass of pinot noir and lose myself. Not since The Fault in Our Stars by John Green or Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn have I been so entirely captivated by a novel. Today at work when I was reading, I lost track of time, and next thing I knew it was 6:15 and the library had closed at 6. This book made me happy, it made me cry, and it has a beginning sentence hook so good that I've been sharing it with everyone. "My mother is a prostitute."

I haven't read Shades of Grey yet, but I will, and I can't wait. Read this. Read it now.

I enjoyed Salt to the Sea but this one just didn’t capture my attention in the same way and I gave up on it about 20% of the way through. Also not helped by the fact that I had the audiobook version and apparently Alpha from The Walking Dead has ruined the American southern accent for me, because I now find it vaguely menacing no matter who’s speaking 😬

Ultimately, this was forgettable despite a sultry premise.
