It’s a nice book, but nowhere near the quality of other books by Jojo Moyes. The storyline is ok, but the characters are thin... can’t put my finger on it, but I was missing something the entire book.

Fantastic

The characters live and breathe! I’ve yet to find a JoJo Moyes that I don’t enjoy 150%. Such a fantastic author

The last 1/3 of the book makes the slow going of this read. The Spanish House is at the heart of this novel and truly its own character. Secrets, lies, dishonesty, death, reimagining your life, and obsession are main themes in this novel.

more like a 4.5 cause the first half was pretty slow but i DEVOURED the second half. when things got interesting, they were INTERESTING.

this book is not marketed as a horror, but i don’t think i’ve ever read a character more terrifying than matt mccarthy. he made me so uncomfortable — and that’s a compliment to jojo moyes for writing him that way. i’m confused as to why laura stayed with him in the end. idc if he’s mentally ill, surely you can make sure he’s alright and be with nicholas at the same time ? but ok.

the vibes kinda gave hidden gem itv show that gets cancelled after two seasons. in the best way.

plus, “the cousins” were easily the best characters.

This one started off cute but had a terrible ending - I know that in reality people don’t always get their comeuppance but in fiction they absolutely should!
