Spencer moves back into the cabin her parents built to start over after a bad break up. When she gets there she takes on a new assignment to ghost write a series of books. As part of her research she is partnered up with Blake, the new detective who also relocated to escape a bad breakup. While she is shadowing Blake they find themselves on the hunt for a serial killer who seems to take an interest in Spencer.

After reading the first four chapters I had read four different POVs. I was thoroughly intrigued and this book held that and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. When I got this book I thought I was getting a romance book with a side of murder mystery. Nope. Wrong. And don't ask me why I thought that but this was a murder mystery/suspense with a very small side of romance. Even though I was completely wrong about the book I still really enjoyed it. With the multiple POVs it really captivated me and kept me wanting to start just one more chapter until it was done and then left me wanting more. And therein lies the problem, I didn't like this ending at all. I don't like endings that I am supposed to make my own assumptions as to what happens next. I only hope that there is a follow up book to this to give me more answer. So even though I am a bit disappointed in the ending I still really loved this book and would recommend it to everyone. I recognize that my issues with the ending are mine alone and others will probably really love it.

I was super confused at the beginning and I lowkey remained confused throughout the book.
I wasn’t scared hahaha which was odd
I don’t really read a ton of thrillers. I like reading them once in a while. I generally prefer not knowing who the killer is from the get go so this was a change.

This book left me with some questions.

Read an arc in exchange for my honest review

I love a great mystery/thriller with strong characters and a strong and solid storyline like nothing I've read before and this book was right up my alley! J.L. Drake is a new author for me, so I had no idea what I was getting. I was drawn by the beautiful cover, hooked in with the intriguing blurb, and I knew I just had to read it. Behind My Words is great stand alone novel that pulled me in from the beginning. It is filled with surprises, plot twists at every turn and really kept me guessing throughout.

I really enjoyed going on this thrilling ride J.L. Drake took me on and what a jaw-dropping twist at the end!

It’s no secret that I am a HUGE fan of J.L. Drake and when I saw that this book was coming, I knew I would have to read it. I didn’t get the opportunity to review it the first time I read it back in May when it released… BUT that just meant I got to go back and re-read it!

J.L. Drake takes you on a journey of mystery, murder, intrigue, romance, steam, and so many twists and turns that you have no choice but to keep turning the page to find out what is going on! She immerses you in this world with Blake and Spencer and the minute you step into it, there is no turning back. You are in for the ride of your life, and when it is all said and done and you read the final words on the page, you are struck down and needing to go back and read it all again.

Blake and Spencer are fire! These two characters jumped off the pages and became real people. I watched their story unfold page by page as though they were on a big screen at the theater and I was watching it all come to life right in front of me. The attention to detail and immaculate imagery only heightens each and every page of this mystery, making you want to be in there with them.

If you haven’t read any of Jodi’s work yet, this is one you should definitely read. It will hook you in, and even when it is all said and done… you won’t be able to let it go. This book will haunt you.

Five stars for this thrilling mystery romantic suspense that will keep you invested with every single turn of the page.

AMAZING.

I'm pretty new to romantic suspense novels; I just recently picked up the interest. Novels like this one is what keeps me hooked!

It was heartbreaking to read about the death of her parents and the circumstances of it. At the same time, it was so sweet to see how close she was to her uncle/aunt and the others at the police station.

Blake was obviously delicious, and even though he will correct anyone who mistakenly call his past career 'SWAT' instead of Tactical Unit or whatever it was, and that he doesn't think it's an attractive career... IT's HOT.

Some of the downsides:
-I felt like we didn't see a lot of what Blake thought of Spencer, physically. We know he's attracted, but I feel like at times I really wanted to know what he was thinking and feeling and I didn't get to. There were a few times where he did certain things, like slapping her butt playfully, that seems a little out of character but we don't get to see his thought process and he never does it again. Just little things like that...

-Often times, I found myself confused about the environment and the scenery of the novel. I'm not sure if others felt that as well, but I quite often had to re-red a sentence because the transition of their movements wasn't clear or it was too sudden. It might seem unimportant, but I think that small details, even just a few words of how the character is suddenly on the other side of the room, are crucial for me to be able to read between the lines and imagine the scene better.

-I'm not sure if it was mentioned in the beginning of the novel and I missed it, but I kept getting confused as to what Spencer was doing with the police department. She's a writer, has the logic and attention to details to be a detective or officer, but isn't. She has ID and access to the station, but isn't a SPD employee. I was a little confused by that, but I just ignored it and didn't let it affect the story too much.

Lastly...THE ENDING. OH MY GOD. I DID NOT SEE THAT ONE COMING. Though I wish some hints had been dropped a little more throughout the book, the ending left me shook, unsteady, angry, surprised...basically all the feelings were felt.

The way it ends also makes you think there could be a sequel, but if you think about it realistically, I think it would be best if there wasn't one. It just goes to show us that certain things stay in the dark your entire life... It was a crazy way to finish the book, but I was sooo into it.

Basically, read this book. At least so I know other people felt the angst of that ending too!
