Slow burn. Not my favorite Lucy Foley book.

much worse than the other one, because it didn't have the voice cast work half as well. performances were mediocre at best and borderline unlistenable at worst. this experience was the complete opposite of the hunting party - I may have liked it more if I had read this one instead of listening to it

characters sucked, atmosphere was boring, and the general plot was whatever. it only got truly exciting when
will, the worst character, was revealed to be the victim, and I wanted to see who was gonna kill the guy. this book gets one star alone for killing him off

I think this is my first time listening to a book with a cast instead of a single reader. It took some getting used to, and I don’t think I’d like it for all books. In this case, though, it did add clarity to the shifting perspectives.

I’ve seen many reviews compare The Guest List to Agatha Christie, and it’s an apt comparison. Little throwaway details are almost never actually inconsequential. And, The Guest List is also thoroughly modern thematically and in the ways it uses the connectedness of cell phones and the internet.

Foley is an absolute master at ratcheting up the tension and growing dread. She slowly reveals secrets and simmering resentments over the course of the book, until the reader feels that something must break and the murder seems almost inevitable. And her setting, an isolated island off the coast of Connemara, is a well-developed character of its own. There is nothing “cozy” about this mystery and everyone it touched leaves the island changed.
