Not for me I fear. Very much on the nose that I felt like I was being spoonfed the irony, despite agreeing with Ng's message.
Not a book I'll be mulling over since it leaves nothing to the imagination unfortunately.

Page turner. I burned through this faster than I have many shorter novels. In addition to the plot twists and turns  the book explores interesting ideas, political and moral and personal. Ng's omniscient narrator sees through the eyes of many characters without the pivots being distracting.

“One had followed the rules, and one had not. But the problem with rules... was that they implied a right way and a wrong way to do things. When, in fact, most of the time they were simply ways, none of them quite wrong or quite right, and nothing to tell you for sure what side of the line you stood on.“

Wow… I couldn’t put this down! I’ve been putting off reading this book for so long, thinking I wouldn’t really be into such a character-driven story but damn it was good. Almost Malibu Rising-esque. I feel like the plot doesn’t really take shape until at least 2/3 into the book but I didn’t even care. The writing and characters are so interesting. I’ll have to watch the show now!

i fear i struggle to actually dnf a book so i revisited this. was it worth it? not particularly. the plot was much more interesting than i had thought at first, but everything was just completely unsatisfying. i’m pissed off.
i would also like to clarify that unlike most of the other negative reviews, my issue was not “poor rich white woman why is the author so mean to her:(“ in fact my issue with mrs richardson was that she was so over-the-top cartoonishly evil. i also firmly believe adoption is legalized human trafficking and surrogacy is the most extreme form of misogyny and exploitation. i have no issue with how the book portrayed any of these issues. my issue was with the book sucking regardless of ethics.

Beautifully written story with parallel lives and sudden twists. I really enjoyed how the author seamlessly integrated the different character perspectives.
